DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE

  • The booklet, published in three languages (Dutch, English and French) aims to provide information on how to sell drinks containing alcohol responsibly. It contains information on:
    • The legal age for the sale of alcoholic beverages (> 0,5% vol): (16 for fermented beverages and 18 for spirits (> 1.2%).
    • How to prevent underage customers from buying alcohol: Advice on how to explain the law and to ask for ID if in doubt.
    • How to refuse underage people who refuse to comply: Advice on explaining that the sale of alcohol to those under the legal purchase age is illegal, on staying calm, friendly, yet firm and on calling the police if necessary.
    • Preparing employees: What to do if help staff are faced with difficult clients.
  • The booklet also comes with a sticker indicating the legal age for the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
  • As of December 2015, the Belgian federation is in discussion with the local authorities of the city of Ghent in order for the municipality to support the initiative. This would allow the initiative to have more effect and be implemented by a maximum amount of local night shops.
