OBJECTIVE

  • To help night shop staff sell drinks containing alcohol responsibly.
  • To prevent alcohol abuse by underage people.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE

  • The booklet, published in three languages (Dutch, English and French) aimed to provide information on how to sell drinks containing alcohol responsibly. It contained information on:
    • The legal age for the sale of alcoholic beverages (> 0,5% vol): (16 for fermented beverages and 18 for spirits (> 1.2%).
    • How to prevent underage customers from buying alcohol: Advice on how to explain the law and to ask for ID if in doubt.
    • How to refuse underage people who refuse to comply: Advice on explaining that the sale of alcohol to those under the legal purchase age is illegal, on staying calm, friendly, yet firm and on calling the police if necessary.
    • Preparing employees: What to do if help staff are faced with difficult clients.
  • The booklet also came with a sticker indicating the legal age for the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
