DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE
- "Smashed" is a hard hitting performance and workshop programme developed in consultation with young people. It is aimed at high school pupils aged 12-14 and is offered for free across the UK. Financially supported by Diageo, it was developed and is executed independently by Collingwood Learning.
- The package schools receive is a live theatre performance, interactive workshop, teaching materials, and evaluation:
- A team of actors deliver the hour long performance which is followed by a 40 minute long interactive workshop which includes activities and exercises. Both powerfully explore the dangers of alcohol misuse amongst young people, and encourage responsible decision making around alcohol. It is hoped that young people take away an understanding of the facts, causes, and consequences surrounding alcohol misuse.
- Teaching resources and video clips from the performance are available for teachers to use as follow up.
- The project forms a key part of schools Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum.
- After performances Collingwood Learning tweets about the programme.
- 2009/2010 academic year: 69 schools and 18,000 students were reached.
- 2011/12 academic: 91 schools and over 14,000 students were reached. In March 2011: Mark Spencer, Member of Parliament for Sherwood saw see the ‘Smashed’ Programme. He really enjoyed the performance and was impressed by the reactions of the students and staff to the show.
- 2012/2013 academic year: 66 schools and 13,700 students were reached.
- 2013/14 academic year: 71 schools and over 14,000 students were reached.
- Over 10 years (the 2013/2014 academic year) the programme reached 1,165 schools and 210,320 students.
- 2013/2014 academic year (questionnaires given to students and to teachers) showed:
- Students: 91% claimed to have learnt more about the risks of alcohol misuse; 89% now know who to talk to about alcohol issues; 96% enjoyed the programme and 81% said they would avoid alcohol misuse in the future.
- Teachers: 99% believe that the experience is a valuable aid to student learning; 98% believe that it explores "relevant issues" and 93% believe it supports the curriculum.
