DESCRIPTION OF THE INITIATIVE

  • Part of the Pan-European campaign "European Night Without Accidents", held on the third Saturday of October every year.
  • The primary target group is young people aged between 18 to 30 years old.
  • Young adult volunteers encourage groups of young people to designate a driver for the evening. The driver is identified by a bracelet and when leaving the premises he/she is asked to undergo a breathalyser test.

IMPACT

  • In 2015, again in co-operation with Portuguese colleagues, it took place on the border (Badajoz-Elvas).  8 Spanish drivers took part, as focus was on the "new" Noc-turnos programme.
  • In 2014, the initiative took place in Tui. As in 2013, FEBE co-operated with their Portuguese colleagues, which carried out the 100% cool program the same night in the neighboring city of Valença.  81 Spanish drivers took part.
  • In 2013, the initiative was run in Badajoz, where 125 designated drivers showed a 0.0 BAC.  A celebration was held with Portuguese neighbours (who developed the program, 100% cool) the same night in the neighboring town of Elvas. Simultaneous BAC controls were carried out on the Spain-Portugal border.
  • In 2012, the initiative was run in Granada. 90 designated drivers showed a 0.0 BAC.
  • In 2011 the initiative was run in two differents cities, Alcobendas (Madrid) and Granada. There were 82 designated drivers in Alcobendas and 146 in Granada. Total, 228 designated drivers. In Granada there were 12 local volunteers and 1 came from RYD.
  • In 2009 and 2010 the initiative took place in Lleida (Catalonia) with 162 designated drivers.
  • In 2008 the initiative waw run in Córdoba and resulted in 79 designated drivers.
  • The campaign receives good press coverage by the local media every year.
